Cameroon and Guinea are the latest teams to arrive in town for the Total U-20 Africa Cup of Nations Zambia 2017.
‘Les Lionceaux’ as the Cameroonians are nicknamed touched down at Lusaka on Monday night led by Head Coach, Cyprien Asshu Bessong.
The Cameroonians have at least six days to prepare for their opening match in Group B against South Africa on Monday, 27 February 2017 in Ndola. Other teams in Group B are Senegal and Sudan.
Meanwhile, the Senegalese, losing finalists in the last edition on home soil in 2015 were expected to arrive in Ndola on Tuesday afternoon.
On the otherhand, Guinea also breezed into town last Sunday after a training camp in Pretoria, South Africa. ‘Le Syli Junior’ wrapped up their preparations in South Africa with a 3-0 win over fellow finalists Sudan last week courtesy a goal each from Momo Yansane, Naby Bangoura and Mamadouba Diaby.
The Guineans will play in Group A with hosts Zambia, Egypt and Mali.
Four-time champions, Egypt have confirmed their arrival for Thursday, 23 February 2017, three days ahead of their opening match against Mali in Lusaka. The Junior Pharaohs beat Kenya 3-2 in a friendly on Monday (20 February 2016) in Cairo. The Egyptians led 3-0 at half time thanks to strikes from Karim ‘Nedved’ Hassan, Ahmed Hamdy and Mostafa Mohamed. Ovellah Ochieng pulled two back for the Kenyans in the second half.
South Africa’s Amajita also held Mali to a 1-1 draw in their final preparatory match last Sunday (19 February 2017) in Polokwane. Sibongakonke Mbatha gave the South Africans the lead on 74 minutes from a free-kick before Boubacar Traore leveled for ‘Les Aiglons’ a minute later.
Earlier the South Africans lost 1-2 to hosts Zambia in a friendly in Lusaka. Enoch Mwepu and Edward Chiluyo hit target in either half for Zambia whilst Liam Jordan reduced the deficit for Amajita.
The match came barely few days after the Zambians had arrived from a two-week training camp in Spain. Whilst there, they beat the youth side of Spanish side, Tenerife and recorded a similar victory over the Youth side of Swiss side, FC Basel. Their only defeat was a 1-3 loss to Barcelona youth team.
