Blair Cobbs v Carlos Ortiz

Welterweight Blair “The Flair” Cobbs, whose mere name brings up various reactions from boxing fans already, will return on the Feb. 14 DAZN card headlined by Ryan Garcia and Francisco Fonseca.

That was already known, but now we have an opponent, too. The 30-year-old Cobbs (13-0-1, 9 KOs) will face Ghana’s 36-year-old Samuel Kotey (23-2-0, 16 KOs) in a 10-round fight at 147 pounds on the show.

“I am excited to return on such a great card,” said Cobbs.

“I have been training very hard and know that all my hard work is about to pay off. My body feels great and I’m looking sharp in sparring. I’m ready to take this dude out.”

Cobbs last fought on the Nov. 2 Canelo-Kovalev undercard in Las Vegas, stopping Carlos Ortiz after six rounds.

It wasn’t much of a statement from Cobbs, as Ortiz is a club fighter, but while opinions differ on what kind of upside Cobbs has at his age, he’s always out there to entertain, which leaves him vulnerable. Ortiz, for instance, dropped Cobbs in the first round.

Much of the hand-wringing over Cobbs stems from his leaning into a pro wrestling style persona. He takes his nickname and other mannerisms from Ric Flair, and has used the entrance music of Stone Cold Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels in the past.

“I love what I do,” Cobbs said. “I am ready to have another great year and continue to put on a great, entertaining show for the fans.”

In his last fight, a scheduled six-round welterweight contest, the Baltimore-based Kotey, aka Unbelievable, scored a R2 TKO against Miami-based, 33-year-old Nicaraguan, Sergio Gomez (20-26-0) at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Expo on Oct. 25, 2019.
