Dillian Whyte: Andy Ruiz Jr or Alexander Povetkin

January 1, 2020

When Dillian Whyte returns to the ring in April, he is likely to face either Andy Ruiz Jr or Alexander Povetkin, according to boxing promoter Eddie Hearn.

Whyte was cleared of any wrongdoing by UK Anti-Doping after reports of a failed drugs test in the run-up to his points win against Oscar Rivas in the summer.

He was in action on the undercard of Anthony Joshua‘s fight against Andy Ruiz Jr earlier in December, and he may be fighting again in April in the UK.

Hearn told iFL TV: ‘Got a missed call from him (Whyte) actually.

‘Looking to fight in April, possibly in the UK. Again, it all depends on Joshua’s next fight, and Usyk-Chisora.

‘Dillian Whyte, where are we going to place him and slot him in?

‘I love the Andy Ruiz fight for Dillian Whyte. Will they take it? Probably not.’

Whyte got a unanimous decision win against Mariusz Wach on the undercard of Joshua vs Ruiz Jr, but it appears Hearn doesn’t think he will be getting the former champion.

‘I like the Povetkin fight for Dillian Whyte, I think that’s an absolute war. But, ultimately, all these fights for Dillian are great, but we’ve got to get him a world title fight.

‘We’ve got to see where we are with the WBC. We’re not the mandatory until 2021, which as you know, I don’t agree with.’

Whyte has been reinstated as WBC interim champion and has a world title shot at Deontay Wilder, but will have to wait until 2021 as Wilder’s defence against Tyson Fury in February is his mandatory challenge for the year.
