Irish boxer Michael Conlan may be suffering from one of the most shocking decisions ever at the Olympics, but one fan is determined to cheer him up.
A five-year-old supporter was as devastated as the rest of Ireland to see Conlan robbed of a chance to add a gold medal to his collection on Tuesday, so decided he would send his own school medal to the 24-year-old along with a heartfelt letter.
London 2012 bronze medalist Conlan lost his quarter-final bout against Vladimir Niktin, despite completely out-boxing his opponent over three rounds, when the judges somehow found the fight in the Russian’s favour.
It is a result that has sent shock waves through the amateur boxing world, with Conlan himself vowing never to box again for the governing body AIBA.
Presumably the youngster won the medal for the being the sweetest kid in his school, but Conlan was delighted to come across his fan’s letter.
