Alvarez has put his May 5 fight with Gennady Golovkin in serious jeopardy by failing drug tests for fat-stripping, muscle-maker Clenbuterol.

TV bosses in America have even stopped plugging the fight and offered PPV buyers refunds.

It now seems increasingly likely the grudge rematch – after GGG was robbed for a draw last year – will be binned.

A hand injury has forced Saunders out of his April 14 WBO title defence against Martin Murray – with a rematch pencilled in for June.

But his MTK manager Matthew Macklin has revealed Saunders still wants to beat up the heavy-handed doping suspect.

Macklin – who wants to believe Canelo’s contaminated meat excuse – said: “Canelo is a fantastic talent and a great fighter.

“I have never suspected him of being someone on performance-enhancing drugs.

“I trained all over the world and, maybe I was naive, but I never saw any of it.

“But with the people failing tests in the last two years you have to say it is a concern.

“There have always been links with athletics and other sports but people get killed in boxing so it’s a lot more worrying.

“But Billy is not worried, he wants these fight.

“Billy just wants the chance to fight the best, he has become a world champion, he’s undefeated, he was an 18-year-old Olympian.

“Now he wants the big fights, the big money, the kudos and everything that comes with it.

“Canelo and Golovkin are arguably the two best pound-for-pound fighters in the world and Billy Joe wants to be a part of that. The time is now.”
