In what was likely a first in international football, Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan wore a customised captain’s arm armband for Ghana’s 5-0 win over Ethiopia in their 2019 Group F Afcon qualifier at the Baba Yara Stadium, in Kumasi, this afternoon.
The personalised armband Gyan wore for the Stars’ comfortable win was in the red, gold and green colours of Ghana, and had facial his image imprinted on it.
Some critics have been in full cry over the non-handover of the captain’s armband following Gyan’s second half replacement by coach Kwasi Appiah with Abdul Majeed Waris.
Social media is blazing with controversy that Gyan walked off the pitch without handing over the captain’s armband to deputy skipper Andre Ayew, adding fuel to a perceived rift between the duo over the captaincy.Ayew received a different captain’s armband from an official of the Black Stars, which he in turn handed over to Harrison Afful when the former was also substituted.
