Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero says he is not interested in Manchester United players
Footballers are often faced with tough questions when it comes to picking players for their ultimate XIs, with the repercussions of leaving out a close friend often leading to safe answers.
But ahead of the Manchester derby this week, City striker Sergio Aguero felt no pressure to pay any hollow platitudes to his nearest rivals and instead opted to stoke the fire.
City head into the clash at the Etihad Stadium one point and one place above Manchester United, with Pep Guardiola’s side currently occupying the final Champions League place heading into the final six games.
Aguero was asked if there were any United players he would like to have in the City side
Aguero’s words may come back to haunt him against a side that are unbeaten in 23 matches
The 28-year-old joked there is not one player he would prefer to have at the Etihad Stadium
Aguero, who was promoting a new unique pair of Puma boots he shall be wearing in the game, is asked: ‘Name one current Manchester United player you would have at Manchester City?’ The Argentine responds in Spanish: ‘I would prefer that it was no-one!’
United will be stiff opponents as it is, after they extended their unbeaten run to 23 games with a 2-0 win at Burnley, but the likes of world-record signing Paul Pogba and the not-so-cheap Anthony Martial will be out to prove a point to Aguero.
The former Atletico Madrid striker faces a race to be fit for the clash after being replaced in the first half of extra time against Arsenal at Wembley on Sunday by Fabian Delph.
Aguero has scored 12 goals in his past 12 matches for Manchester City in all competitions
Pep Guardiola will end a season without a trophy for the first time in his managerial career
Jose Mourinho is preparing his United side to face City in a vital fixture in the race for top four
Pep Guardiola later confirmed he will face a fitness test ahead of their Premier League clash against their city rivals.
Aguero, who has scored 12 goals in his past 12 matches for Manchester City in all competitions, could be replaced in the starting line-up by Gabriel Jesus after the Brazilian returned to full training following his broken metatarsal.
But City have further injury doubts over David Silva (hamstring), John Stones (muscle) and Fernandinho (muscle) with the side aiming to salvage a top four finish from Guardiola’s trophyless first season in charge.
