Liverpool (4-3-3)

Denied Suarez at start of second half giving them team impetus to get second and third goals.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 9

Robbed Alba and crossed for Wijnaldum to get the second goal. Huge performance.

Joel Matip – 7.5

Faultless as Liverpool stood strong against Suarez. Foul on Messi could have been costly.

Virgil van Dijk – 9

Worth every penny of the Coutinho money spent on him. Immense defensively and constructive going forward.

Andy Robertson – 8

Few doubts now he’s Europe’s best left-back. Vital before going off injured.

Jordan Henderson – 9

Great run beyond to set up first goal. Imposed himself and ran off injury.

Fabinho – 9

The engine powering Liverpool’s ferocious start. Set tone with crunching 50-50 on Suarez and tempo never dropped.

Struggled to fill Salah’s shoes in the first half but it was some cross for the third goal.

Divock Origi – 9.5

Everything Klopp would have wanted from him. Held the ball up, moved intelligently. Wide awake for fourth goal.

Barcelona (4-3-3)

Marc Andre Ter Stegen – 6

Could only push Henderson’s pass into Origi’s path for Liverpool opener. Let down by his defence for winner.

Sergio Roberto – 5.5

Was rattled by Mane earlier on and struggled to provide quality when he got forward.

Gerard Pique – 6

Never panicked when under siege. But usually impeccable positioning and anticipation missing for Liverpool goals.

Lenglet Clement – 5.5

Rattled throughout. One of those dozing when Origi scored the winner.

Jordi Alba – 6

Mistake for the goal and then went forward to make amends but inexplicably passed to Messi when clear on goal.

Arturo Vidal – 6

Battle-worn midfield soldier. Used possession well to ease pressure but eventually flattened by the red tornado.

Sergio Busquets – 6

Brilliant pass for Alba early on. Helped frustrate Liverpool in first half, overwhelmed in the second period. In tears at the end.

Philippe Coutinho – 5

Game played at speeds that just aren’t on his dial. Rollicked by Suarez for not pressing.

All the old tricks winning free-kicks by both foul and fair means to break game up but couldn’t find elusive European goal away from home.
