GRUDGING RESPECT: Handshakes between the two managers have not been too friendly

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola insists he’s ready to shake Jose Mourinho’s hands as he takes on his old nemesis’ Manchester United side.

The pair have long had a frosty rivalry, going back to their time in charge of Barcelona and Real Madrid, respectively, a few years ago.

Having contested one of the biggest grudge matches in world football, Guardiola and Mourinho will now meet in their first Manchester Derby in Beijing this Monday, albeit in a friendly rather than a competitive fixture.

Asked if he would respect the pre-match tradition of shaking his opposite number’s hand, the Spaniard said: ‘Of course. We are polite guys. Why not?

‘Why shouldn’t I shake hands with him? No reason why not. He wants to win, I want to win.

‘It’s a friendly game, a really friendly game.’
