September 18, 2014

There is a new local hero among football fans in South Korea. He goes by the name of Seung-Woo Lee.

Lee is at the Barcelona academy and has generated huge amounts of hype with his performances in the AFC Under-16 Championship.

South Korea will face Australia in the final of the tournament after crushing Syria 7-1 in the semis, a game in which the Barça starlet was once again on song, scoring once and setting up two further goals.

The 16-year-old has scored on each of his appearances at the competition (he missed his country's opener through suspension) and was compared to Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona for his sensational strike against Japan, in which he dribbled almost the full length of the field.

The youngster has become an instant social media phenomenon, netting 40,000 fans on Facebook in two weeks. What's more, on match days he is one of the five top trending topics on Naver, South Korea's most popular search engine.
