Nice keep soaring, Roma, Villarreal stumble

Nice moved even further ahead in the Ligue 1 standings after a weekend for the UEFA Europa League teams that brought frustration for Roma, Inter, Manchester United and Villarreal.

Nice recorded a sixth consecutive Ligue 1 victory on Sunday to keep morale levels sky high in the build-up to UEFA Europa League matchday four

Wylan Cyprien scored twice, with Mario Balotelli and Alassane Pléa also on target, as Nice swept Nantes aside 4-1 to stretch their lead at the summit to six points – with fellow UEFA Europa League hopefuls St-Étienne doing them a favour by holding second-placed Monaco 1-1.

There was less to get excited about for Roma as they could only draw 0-0 away to Empoli following a superb display from goalkeeper Łukasz Skorupski – on loan from the Giallorossi.

Also in Italy, Frank de Boer’s Internazionale lost for the fourth time in five Serie A fixtures, succumbing 1-0 at Sampdoria.

Like Roma, Manchester United were also undone by a fine goalkeeping performance, Burnley’s Tom Heaton helping claim a goalless stalemate at Old Trafford as United fell to eighth.

Villarreal‘s unbeaten start to the Liga campaign was halted by Eibar, meanwhile, and recovering Schalke drew 0-0 at Dortmund.
