Nigeria have successfully defended their AWCON trophy, beating South Africa 4-3 on penalties after extra time at the refurbished Accra Sports Stadium.
It was a real contest for the bragging rights at the Ghana 2018 AWCON championship, a sweet vengeance for Nigeria who succumbed 0-1 to South Africa in their opening group match at Cape Coast.
At the venue where South Africa lost a warm-up match 0-1 to hosts, Ghana, six days before the competition kicked off, South Africa lost, again.
Though the Nigerians had to sweat for it, they did prove that champions do die hard. Indeed, they didn’t even die, staying immortal during the combat to emerge victors for the third straight time.
All hail Nigeria, nine times Africa’s Women champions after a battle royale that should get them ready – along with South Africa and Cameroon – to go mark new territory for the continent at the world cup in France, next year.
