The Ashanti regional minister, Simon Osei Mensah, has called on the people of Kumasi to rally their support behind Asante Kotoko ahead of their last Group C CAF Confed Cup home match against Al Hilal of Sudan, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Sunday.
The Porcupine Warriors put up a sterling performance against Zambian side, Nkana FC, last Sunday to get themselves back into contention in the group with a resounding 3-0 victory to avenge their 1-3 loss a week, earlier, in Kitwe, Zambia.
The Ghanaian giants are in the chase to progress to the quarter finals of the competition for the first time since 2005. A victory against Sudanese giants, Al Hilal, will help the 2005 finalists to top Group C log with a match left to define their chances.
The regional minister, therefore, called on the people of Kumasi and its environs to troop to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to invigorate coach C. K. Akonnor’s charges for victory, on Sunday.
“Kotoko is now the beacon of hope for Ghana football and they’re hoisting the flag of Ghana flambuoyantly.
“I will urge all the good people of Kumasi to rally their support behind Asante Kotoko to progress to the next stage” he told a section of the supporters called Awareness Group during a recent visit.
“This must be a national agenda to cushion Kotoko because they’re not representing only Asanteman but Ghana at large.
“There shouldn’t be divisions among football fans; for … Ghana football, we should all support the team to victory,” he added.
Asante Kotoko have another opportunity to avenge another loss against Al Hilal – who pipped them 1-0 in Sudan – and top the group, to potentially secure progression to the quarterfinals.
kick off is scheduled for 4pm.
