On this day, 8 August 1992 (Exactly 27 years ago today), Spain beat Poland 3-2 in the Gold medal match of the Men’s Olympic Football tournament at the Camp Nou, Barcelona, Spain.

It is not often the host win Olympic gold in football, but the Spanish did just that and in dramatic fashion.

To avoid extra -time Spain put their own twist on it, rallying from a 1-0 deficit in the second half to defeat Poland at the Camp Nou. Francisco “Kiko” Narvaez scored 25 seconds into stoppage time, chipping a lose ball over goalkeeper Aleksander Klak before a crowd of 95,000 in the Nou Camp Stadium that included King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia and IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch.

Wojciech Kowalczyk had opened the scoring for Poland six seconds into first half injury time. Ten minutes after King Juan Carlos had entered the stadium, Spain tied it on Abelardo’s header in the 65th minute. Kiko lifted the hosts into the lead in the 70th minute, but Poland tied it on a Ryszard Staniek goal six minutes later, setting up one fantastic finish.

On this day 8 August 1984 (Exactly 35 years ago today) Carl Lewis won 3rd gold medal of the Los Angeles Olympics joining Kirk Baptiste and Thomas Jefferson in an American sweep of the 200m.

On this day 8 August 1984 (Exactly 35 years ago today) Nawal El Moutawakel of Morocco became the first female Olympic champion of a Muslim nation, and the first of her country in the 400m hurdles at the Los Angeles Olympics.

On this day 8 August 1992 (Exactly 27 years ago today) The original US ‘Dream Team’ won the basketball gold at the Barcelona Olympics 117-85 over Croatia; featured superstars Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Scotty Pippen, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing.

On this day 8 August 2016 (Exactly 3 years ago today) Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszú won the women’s 100m backstroke gold medal in a time of 58.45; her second gold medal of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

On this day 8 August 1983 (Exactly 36 years ago today) Carl Lewis won 100m gold in the 1st IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Helsinki, Finland .
