Footage has emerged on social media appearing to show Tottenham fans being attacked by police on the eve of the Champions League final in Madrid.
Supporters have travelled in good numbers for the all-English final against Liverpool in Madrid but anticipation appears to have been overshadowed by ugly scenes on Friday night.
In the clip, which was posted on Tottenham fan account COYS NEWS, police are seen entering the bar with batons before one supporter drinking outside the restaurant appears to be struck by an officer.
One supporter was carrying an eight-year-old child on their shoulders while the melee occurred, according to Daily Telegraph correspondent Tom Morgan.
The incident is believed to have happened at the Cafe and Tapas restaurant, near the Puerta del Sol.
Morgan spoke to one fan who was in the venue at the time of the police visit where the fan went on to explain how events unfolded
‘We were having a laugh and having a joke – it was all Tottenham and just fun,’ one supporter said.
‘Then suddenly two of them (police) come at us and suddenly it was bang, bang, they all came steaming in. Smashing tables with their batons. They are bang out of order.’
Morgan goes on to say that police, according to the restaurant, were responding to complaints that Tottenham fans were being aggressive towards their Liverpool counterparts but that police acted ‘too heavily’ when they arrived.
Harry Wade, who claims to have been inside the restaurant during the time of the police visit, gave his account of events.
He wrote on Twitter: ‘F*** the Spanish police. Restaurant full of Spurs, riot police come flying in & start hitting us & tables, we were causing no trouble at all. @spain @madrid #UCL #ChampionsLeague sacks of s***.’
The video appears to have caught the aftermath of events inside the restaurant as supporters are being ushered outside by police, who can be seen wearing helmets and carrying batons.
Fans, including the one filming the video, are ushered out of the venue where one supporter appears to be struck on the back of the legs with a baton.
Around 650 meters away, theLiverpool Echo report that Reds fans were stuck inside a police blockade around the Plaza Sol in Madrid.
Fans descended on the square for an event which saw DJs Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike headline the pre-Champions League final festival.
The report says that supporters were told they could not exit the blockade until midnight due to the size of the crowds.
