Barca set to extend Enrique’s contract

March 31, 2015

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu is going to offer coach Luis Enrique a contract extension until 2017, according to Catalan daily Sport on Tuesday.

Luis Enrique, 44, has a contract until 2016 but Bartomeu is keen to extend it for another season, said Sport.

Luis Enrique took over at Barca from Gerardo Martino nine months ago and – despite an infamous fracas with idol Lionel Messi in January – has guided the Catalans to top spot in la Liga plus the quarterfinals of the Champions League and the Spanish Cup final.

Bartomeu is planning to be a candidate in Barca’s presidential elections in July, despite having being indicted by the Spanish High Court for irregularities in the signing of Brazilian forward Neymar in 2013.

Bartomeu’s principal opponent in the elections is likely to be the hugely popular Joan Laporta, who was the highly successful president of the club from 2003 to 2010.
