According to a report by ESPN, Universal has been rounding out its cast for ‘Flint Strong’, an upcoming boxing film on women’s 154lb titlist, Claressa Shields.

The film is based on a 2015 documentary ‘T-Rex’, which followed a 17-year-old Shields on her way to winning Olympic Gold. Universal was said to have acquired the rights to Shields’ story and that documentary back in 2016, believing there was an inspirational story to tell.

With actress Ryan Destiny — herself a Michigan native — cast to play the leading role of Claressa Shields, Ice Cube has been just been enlisted to play the role of Shields’ former trainer, Jason Crutchfield.

“That’s special to me, I’ll tell you that. That’s an honor,” Crutchfield said. “I feel like I’ve done something right.”

Shields, who has opened up about her sexual abuse as a child, has previously mentioned that the abuse didn’t directly lead her into boxing, but admitted the anger she held inside from it was a contributing factor.

She’ll no doubt have an interesting story, and we’ll just have to hope the execution is on point.
